Leia the Slaya!

This is my 200th post!  And it's the first of the year so I wanted to do something cool.  I've been wanting to do a Frazetta inspired Princess Leia for a while and thought it a good way to kick off 2012.

My kid has really gotten into Star Wars lately but I've only let him watch the good ones (episodes 4,5, and 6).  He has no idea the other three even exist.  As a parent, what do I do?  Let him find out on his own someday?  Will he feel like I lied to him?  Is it better to expose him to them at an early age?  What if he actually likes them?  Can I deal with that as a parent?  I'll love him no matter what but how can I let him know they're wrong, without being too controlling?  The things you don't consider when becoming a parent...

I'm not telling him anything, especially since if he knows about the prequels, I'll have to hear all the bad Anakin acting every day.

Get him hooked on Clone Wars (the tv show) and other good examples of Star Wars deviations.... then when he sees the prequels he'll have already seen how it can be done better.

Just tell him, "There are only three Star Wars movies . . . from a certain point of view . . ."

Dude!!! What an awesome image!!!

I've been dealing with the same issue with my 3 kids... (my daughter's name is Leia!!!) The kids seem to enjoy the 'prequels.' I've tried to 'sell' them on the original trilogy, and tell them how much better it is... but they just don't see a difference... (they don't have a frame of reference.) In the end, ya' know what, I'm just glad they actually like Star Wars!!! (Although I do secretly hold out that as they get older... they'll finally wisen up, and 'get it'!)

Same thing here.

We first show 4-5-6 but they heard about the others at school, and watch some at friend's home.

They seem to like 1-2-3, maybe at their age (9 and 7 for the boys) they are not able to make a difference (especially beacause 1-2-3 are made with things fun for kids). I hope they will better understand when growing.

Did your kids fall into Lego Star Wars ? Their bedroom looks much like a spaceport now, and ships are fighting all over the appartment...

My 4 year's old daughter was yesterday walking with a stick like an old person, and I heard her saying "Master Yoda I am..."

As long as you teach him the correct principles ("Now that right there is bad acting" or "No, midi-chlorians are not canon") then he should be able to govern himself.
Great painting, too! Love the bug-eyes.

This is so awesome I want to eat it.

Also: TOTALLY show your kids the prequels! They'll start talking like Jar Jar Binks ("Meesah wantsa macaroni and cheesah") and how can you miss out on that??

Congratulations on post 200! That is awesome. You can't get much better that pricess Leia doing away with the evil Jaba. Great painting. I would advise that if you do show him 1-3 you are giving in to the dark side.

With two boys of my own I have nightmares about this very problem. What if I come home and one of them is watching Jake Lloyd yelling "Now this is Podracing!" Besides my heart breaking will I have the level headedness not to kick him out of the house with a pillowcase full of cereal and broken dreams? And it's not like you can hide them from him. Someday down the road ol' Plaid Lucas will get bored and come out with a 11th version of the films and it will be everywhere, You just can't buy the kind of sheltering it would take, Good luck is all I can say. Oh, and as always, love the painting. Someday I will be hiring you to do murals in my house. Just fyi.

I came across an excellent article / suggestion to circumnavigate this very problem... I can't wait to try this out for my kids!!! Seems such a simple solution to a complex problem!!!
