Oily Pirate

Around the time I started this blog (more than 5 years ago, wow) I began exclusively painting digitally. When I started I used lots of layers and digital tricks but as time has gone on I've begun basically painting as one would traditionally, using very few, if any, layers or overlays. Originally I liked digital painting for the ways it was different from traditional but slowly found myself unsatisfied with it for those same reasons. So I decided a few months ago it was time to get back into real painting and decided to go with oil paint. I'd only used acrylics before and thought it was as good a time as any to switch to oils as I'd essentially be relearning how. So this is my first attempt, ever, at an oil painting. It took a while since work has me so busy but I really fell in love with the process and can't wait to paint more, hopefully better, oil paintings. Thanks to Dave Malan and Dave McClellan for answering my endless questions.

I LOVE that you are doing oil painting now. There's just something so old-fashioned and romantic about it. Plus, it's fun to watch the process from start to finish. Your first endeavor is awesome (so fitting of this blog. And five years? Whoa.)

That's absolutely amazing Kevin. Everything you touch works I swear. You honestly work at it though, and I am totally in awe of your work each time. I am glad you are doing oils now too. Makes me want to get back into it.

Very Nice Kevin. I took a page out of the Kevin Keele sketchbook and bought some brown paper and b & w pens. LOVING IT!!! I'm going to post some soon and give you all the credit. Or Blame...depends how good they are I guess. LOL

Kevin this is great! I've been a long time admirer of your work! I use some of your images in my class at UVU. The students always want to know who you are. I make sure they know your name so they can find your work.

I've been painting in acrylic for 18 years and just last year switched to photoshop - Your underpainting on this image looks exactly how I start an acrylic painting. In photoshop I take the same approach - underpainting - very few layers and only one brush.

Simplicity.
